Our client, a leading timber processor in Ireland and the UK, is looking for a Trainee Automation Engineer in Cork to support the maintenance and development of electrical and automation systems. You will also drive continuous improvement initiatives and provide technical ownership for site automation systems.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in maintaining and troubleshooting electrical, automation, and control systems.
Support PLC fault finding, programming, and system upgrades.
Complete preventive and reactive maintenance tasks across site equipment.
Maintain and update automation system documentation and electrical drawings.
Support inventory management and usage tracking via PEMAC.
Assist in plant improvement and capital projects.
Build and maintain production reporting systems using PLC data.
Stay updated on new technologies and system enhancements.
Provide support during breakdowns, shutdowns, and on-call duties.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Equipment uptime/downtime
Ratio of reactive vs. preventative maintenance
Number of implemented improvement initiatives
PM task completion rates
Support provided to capital projects
Compliance with maintenance KPIs
Education & Experience:
Trade qualification with 3–5 years in automation maintenance or a 3rd-level degree in Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field
Experience with PLCs, SCADA, VSDs, motor control systems, and industrial equipment
Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair skills
Programming knowledge (PLCs, HMIs, Drives)
Good understanding of safety systems and control hardware
Proficient in computer and technical documentation tools
