We all see the motivational messages on social media –“be your best self”, “lean into fear”, and “push yourself outside of your comfort zone”– and for a brief minute, we vow to. But something stops us – fear.
There’s the fear of going for it – of making a change. Fear of failure, of the unknown, of looking like a fool, and of leaving behind a life you’ve invested so much in. And then there’s also the fear of not making the move. The fear of looking back on your life with regret because you didn’t pursue the career you wanted to.
We all get to a stage where we question the job we are in, but we are too afraid to change it. We spend so much of our time at work or thinking about work. Shouldn’t we be happy and fulfilled with it?
Candidates have highlighted the fears they have when changing roles or even applying for a new role. We have all been there! But the joy of changing jobs and working with a Recruiter is that you will always have someone to assist you, help with the nerves, and talk you through your concerns. You will not be making the move alone.
Some of the common things we face when we think about changing jobs:
I haven’t interviewed in over 10 Years:
No doubt interviews are a scary thought, but you won’t be doing this alone. If you invest time in the interview prep, talking through all aspects of what could happen in the interview, this will help the nerves. Find all the Interview Advice you'll need in our articles.
I am comfortable. I know my job so well:
The easy option is to stay where you are. You know everyone within the organisation and you could do the job in your sleep! But where is the challenge in that?
How will I even approach handing in my notice:
You know your team and your management so well. Telling them that you are leaving is always going to be daunting. But like ripping off a band-aid, the quicker you do it the more relief you will feel!
What if I don’t get the job:
What if you do? What if it turns out to be your dream job?
I will be starting from scratch with a new team and organisation – is it the right time to move?
Waiting for what you think might be the right time might actually make you miss an opportunity. Why not take the leap?
It’s okay to be scared of the possible consequences of switching jobs but remember you are not doing this alone; you will have support through every step of the process.
