Noeleen Stewart is a Senior Recruitment Consultant with Collins McNicholas, Galway and has been with the company for a number of years. Noeleen recently attended a CIMA Event in Galway which was sponsored by Collins McNicholas. CIMA’s guest speaker on the evening was motivational speaker, Gerry Duffy.
“Human beings can do so much more than we give ourselves credit for.”
That was the opening line delivered by Gerry Duffy, a seasoned motivational speaker, author and knowledgeable businessman, which was held in The G Hotel in Galway on 25th March 2014 with a large attendance.
While it is often proffered that anything is possible with little backup to such statements, no one could question the validity of Gerry’s assertion as he regaled his audience with his many accomplishments – 32 marathons in 32 days; a DECA Ironman, and a DECA Enduroman Ironman Challenge, to name only a few of this man’s inspirational achievements over the last 20 years.
At the event, which was organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Western Branch and sponsored by Collins McNicholas, Gerry inspired listeners with his presentation entitled ‘You can do it! How to achieve your goals’. As we listened to a man who has tested human physical endurance to its maximum on many occasions, it was hard not to believe that we too could achieve our goals by the time he concluded.
In 1995, Gerry was heavily overweight. He was only 27 years old at the time. It took just one step, then one run, to lead him on his way to 20 years of success. As the best-selling author of ‘Who Dares, Runs’, he made it sound so easy for everyone. But for Gerry it was easy because he simply committed to what he wanted to achieve and saw it through. With a gold medal under his belt for the 2011 DECA Enduroman Ironman Challenge, that took 22 hours to complete, we can’t but agree with him that the seemingly impossible can be done.
Gerry has shown that through determination and drive anything can be achieved, if you put your mind to it. The impossible can become possible, even if it does mean a little (or a lot) of pain along the way!
