The demand for science professionals has never been higher. In what can only be described as a candidate-driven market it is thought that jobseekers have an abundance of options to choose from. However, despite the demand for talent there are still several characteristics that organisations desire in new team members.
No matter how qualified you are, there are certain traits that will help you to forge a successful career. Here are my tips to develop a long career in the science industry.
1) Technical acumen
Having the technical experience and background is a key trait when progressing your career in the pharma industry. Understanding the overall functionality of the lab and how it works is a basic requirement.
2) Fast Learner
The ability to learn new skills on the job shows that you are able to keep up with the demands of a fast-paced environment. It shows the organisation that you are eager to learn and develop new skills.
3) Team Player
Being able to work as part of a team is essential in the pharma industry. Many pharmaceutical companies have large teams on site, and having the ability to get along well with others and work together is important.
No position is designed for you to work in isolation. Therefore, working as part of a team gives individuals an opportunity to learn from each other, improve each other’s skills and a chance to share ideas that can benefit the organisation.
The Pharma industry is constantly growing and expanding in Ireland, and is considered a very fast-paced environment. As a result, the ability to adapt to change is highly important.
Showing organisations that you can think quickly on the spot, perform under pressure, and develop and learn new skills is invaluable. Adaptability makes you a key resource to any organisation going forward.
5) Attention to Detail and Compliance
The Pharma industry is highly regulated. For instance the smallest of mistakes could have a deadly effect on a patient’s life. Therefore, a compliance mindset is a must for anyone working in the industry that wants to succeed.
In conclusion, there are a variety of skills required to forge a successful career in the science industry. This is not a definitive guide of requirements. Each role and each organisation is different and looks for different attributes in their teams, however, these traits can only result in a positive impression.
