RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT MANAGER – Medical Devices | Global Projects

We have an exciting new opening for an experienced R&D Manager to join a team of up to 40 Engineers and Scientist on global medical devices projects in the area of continence care. This role will provide functional management and leadership to NPD team to guide and enable them to achieve their goals.


Responsibilities:

Lead Next Generation Intermittent Catheter (IC) Developments: Lead global IC developments to ensure the project is adequately resourced and supported throughout the organization so that it meets the stated objectives for this business in alignment with the Marketing objectives of Continence Care Business and Global R&D. This includes new material and process development and also administrative tasks such as SPRING gate approvals, Product mapping etc

Coordinating development of new products to meet customer needs: Design and develop new products which meet customer needs and which aim to give the company sustainable competitive advantage into the future. This covers not only product development but also process development.

Define NPD plans and objectives: Define the plans and objectives for the PD group and ensure they meet company objectives and are in line with Global Marketing and Global R&D plans (both annual and strategic). Ensure these plans and objectives are implemented and review performance with NPD Associates throughout the year.

Prepare annual department budget: Prepare the annual department budget to ensure PD plans are adequately resourced.

Understand global customer requirements: Through face-to-face or focus group reviews, develop a good understanding of customer requirements which requires substantial travel in the main markets: USA, Germany, UK, France.

Identify new and novel materials, processes and technologies which are suitable for continence care: keep abreast of all major developments in the field of continence care to identify suitable materials, processes and technologies for new products. This requires substantial travel and review of published literature. It also involves developing contacts with specialist companies, universities and visits to specialized trade fairs. 5 – 10%

Encourage innovation in the NPD Group: ensure that there is a high level of innovation and creativity in the product development group by ensuring all Associates interface with key opinion leaders, customers and technology experts on an ongoing basis. Active encouragement is given to explore new areas which are of potential significance to the product areas in development.

Define training plans for NPD Associates: as part of the annual planning process define training requirements for each Associate to ensure continual development of personnel.

Provide technical support to the business units and operations: technical support is provided to the business units and to operations through product testing, competitive product benchmarking, customer visits and presentations, training sessions etc.


Experience / Skill-set

  • Primary technical degree in science or engineering. MSc of PhD would be advantageous
  • Minimum 10 years professional experience.
  • Previous supervisory/management experience, of teams and/or individuals is essential
  • Product development experience in similar environment.
  • Project management.
  • Medical Device Design Control.
